The Internet is flooded with all the shopping possibilities – hardware, gadgets, beauty items, supplements, food, accessories, clothes…and you name it!
Over the years of spending my time on the Internet, I have bought all sorts of stuff, but there was one thing that I was not confident to buy it online - apparel.

You see, not having a supermodel figure (read: thin) is a major concern when it comes to buying something virtual and you can only imagine. Most of the brandless apparel these days tend to run in smaller sizes, hence it’s rather risky to buy it without knowing how exactly it will fit you.
I have been buying shop online for a couple of times, and I have been following some of the ‘golden rules’ in my heart, that I would like to share with you:
1. Always have your measurements ready
This is the mother of all rules. You need to know your exact measurements (chest and waist being the most important), and record them down in both inches and centimeters. It’s important to give it an extra inch for buffer, in case the material is not a stretchy material. And please, this is just for your own record, and you really should not under-measure every inch!
I have once bought a dress based on the sizes (ie UK10, UK12…) but it didn’t fit me at the chest, so I had to return it. So, from then on, I never buy things without the EXACT measurement given for chest and waist.
2. Buy from reputable online boutique
If you are new to a certain sites, how do you know if it is reputable? Well, now most the online boutiques have their social sites (ie Facebook) for product updates…etc. Take a look at their Facebook to read about their customer experiences and their responses. If you see a lot of rants of lousy material or slow responses, forget about the website.
Take a tour on their website, if the photos are mostly blur or can’t be enlarge, or it’s just difficult to navigate, forget about it too.
If you have found that looks like a good dealer, go ahead and try just one piece first for the quality, you can always return for more designs later!
3. Understanding the return policy
I prefer to shop with online boutiques that offer exchange or return policy as long as you ship it back to them. This is a HUGE plus point as I can still take a gamble and peace of mind if I really like a particular design that I ‘think’ will fit. However, this is not a standard policy so ALWAYS find out if they have it.
4. Know your body…when you have the change to go shopping, try out all the different designs you can!
When I have the chance to shop in malls, I like to try out different designs, never mind whether how it looks on me because I will only know how they look exactly on me when I try them personally.
It’s important to know your body shape (whether you are heavy top, or heavy bottom, or short torso), because when it comes to online shopping, sometimes you will be so tempted to get something that looks perfect on the model, and…it might not look as perfect on you. For example, peplums are so in the trend now, and it’s not something that will flatter all body types. And if you have a lot to hide, bodycon dresses might not be the best for you.
No matter how much you like a certain piece looks on the website, ALWAYS visualize yourself in it.
5. Know the material
This is an important thing to note because some materials are slightly stretchable, and some are just stiff.
For example, I prefer buying chiffon material because it dries easily, and it is not as glove-fitting tight as it is supposed to create an airy flow. So, it actually allows some extra tiny space. However, I tend to avoid material polyester (especially dress with zipper) because it’s usually stiff and no chance for expansion. Of course, unless you are very sure about the measurements will fit you.
That’s all for the 5 easy tips that I can think of, once you get something right, it can be addictive!
