Wednesday Tips: Lemon Peel 101

by xin on February 8, 2012

Welcome back to work for fellow Malaysians, a 4 day break in Β row has certainly made me feel lazier instead of recharging.

For that reason, I shall share a light recipe today for the use of lemon peels. As a devotee of lemons, I have never wasted a single skin after using up the zest.

Other than the usual culinary uses, I have several other uses for the peel after making my daily dose of honey lemonade.

lemon Peel

1. Teeth whitener – Squeeze a little zest on your tooth brush on top of your tooth paste for the extra boost for whitening. You can try this as a weekly remedy. However, i haven’t been diligent enough to actually observe any result. But I do get a squeaky clean feeling after use.

2. Skin whitening – After my cleansing routine, sometimes I use the peel (the leftover bulb) to cleanse my skin. It usually leaves my skin really clean, however, it is also very drying if used too frequently. Not suitable for sensitive or dry skin.

3. Scalp cleansing – If you have an oily scalp, this might help! Rub the peel on your scalp and leave it on for a while after your shampoo, rinse it off after a minute. It certainly works as good as, if not better, than those deep cleansing shampoo out there, and cheaper!

4. Air/fridge freshener – This is simple, after using the peels for cosmetic purpose, do not dispose the peel yet! You can simply leave them in the bathroom, bedroom, or the fridge to remove odor. I love the zing of lemon in the air!

5. Wash your sink – I love how lemon does a good job in removing the stains on ceramic bowls/sink.Β  I love using the peel for rubbing the sink, it removes stains really well without additional detergent. And the fresh lemon aroma lingers!

6. Hand/Chopping board freshener- This is pretty common, if your hands stink from cutting onions or garlic, simply rub some peel and voila! Same goes to chopping board.

7. Microwave cleaning – With about half a bowl of water and lemon peel, reheat it in your microwave for about 20 seconds. And all the food odor will be gone. Becareful of the water level as not to overfill it, or it might splatter all around your microwave oven.

Other than the above mentioned and some regular uses, do you have any special tips for maximizing the peel? Do share and I would definitely love to know! πŸ˜€

Nice tips!! Another tip I got from Lemon is…when you drank too much alcohol you ate raw lemon to prevent yourself from getting drunk. Seriously, I never tried this yet though sometimes during wedding dinner i saw people bring raw lemon along =p

PS: My frend used to told me that if you spritz some lemon on your car plate number while washing your car, you will strike Toto. Again, I nvr try though..Because it sounds too good to be true. Haha XD

Yup lemon is pretty awesome! As a teenager I used to put lemon juice on my skin as an exfoliater…it made me skin really smooth by dissolving all the crap on the surface. I also love drinking this with hot water in winter and iced-cold in summer. Just a great way to get Vitamin C into your system.

Oooh interesting tips! I’ve heard of most of them except scalp cleansing, which is pretty interesting πŸ˜€ They do work very well to clean and to freshen the area and to get rid of odours especially in the microwave oven! Hurrah for lemons πŸ˜€

Not to mention, honey lemon! Mmm πŸ˜€

When I was in high school and thought lighter hair would be so cool but wasn’t allowed to dye my hair… I’d spritz my hair with lemon juice. Lightens a little… but feels a wee bit sticky
